The name has a history

“Ardent spirits” is the old-time term for distilled liquor. In Collinsville, it also turned up in property deeds.

Our copper still at Ardent Spirits

1817

The Collins family, early settlers of Collinsville, Illinois, opened a distillery here.

A few years later

After a religious awakening, the brothers became staunch prohibitionists. They shut the operation down, tore the distillery apart and reused the lumber to build other buildings.

For generations

The family’s influence lingered in local property deeds. A clause said that if anyone produced or sold “ardent spirits” on the land, the property would be forfeited to the county. The restriction was eventually repealed, but the wording stayed part of the city’s colorful backstory.

Today

Ardent Spirits, at Old Herald Brewery & Distillery, honors that history with its craft spirits line. The clause is long gone, and the spirits are back.
